In this two hour seminar presentation Ms. Whitney Miner and Mr. Andrew Chen, both associates at Kao & Swope LLP will present a survey of Intellectual Property, and  Dr. William  Kao will present an overview of the emerging subject of Augmented Reality.

Talk Title:   A Survey of Intellectual Property by Whitney Miner and Andrew Chen
Talk Abstract: In this talk you will learn the basics of intellectual property law including how to identify and utilize different types of protection, generate value for clients, and avoid common mistakes.  We will also be reviewing some of the most interesting cases in the media.    
Speaker Bio:  Whitney Miner
Whitney Miner is an associate at Kao & Swope LLP who focuses her practice on IP and commercial litigation. Ms. Miner received her Juris Doctorate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 2012, where she served as an Associate Editor for the Pacific McGeorge Global Business & Development Law Journal and obtained concentrations in intellectual property and business law.  While at McGeorge, Ms. Miner was a member of the Traynor Honor Society and Dean’s List, received the Witkin Award for Academic Excellence in Legal Research & Writing, and received an honors designation in Practical and Persuasive Legal Writing.  Ms. Miner received her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006.Ms. Miner is admitted to practice in California and before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts.
Speaker Bio: Andrew Chen
Andrew Chen is an associate at Kao & Swope LLP who focuses his practice on IP and commercial litigation. Mr. Chen received his Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2014, where he served as Managing Editor for the Entertainment Law Review Entertainment Law Review and as Managing Editor for the Asian Pacific American Law Journal.  He spent his 2L summer working for Kao & Swope as a summer associate. Mr. Chen has a B.A. in Business Economics with a minor in accounting, also from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to law school, he worked as senior contracts compliance associate at KPMG, LLP representing movie studios in auditing merchandising and audio/video distribution licenses. Mr. Chen is admitted to practice in California.
Talk Title: What is Augmented Reality: An Overview by  Dr. William Kao
Talk Abstract:  Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. With the use of technology the view of reality is enhanced / modified by a computer. Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match.
In this talk Dr. Kao will present the fundamentals of AR technology, its characteristics, components of an AR system, and its many applications in navigation, medical, entertainment, military, education, maintenance and repair, and gaming. Also covered will be the difference between virtual and augmented reality, the mixed reality continuum, and the future of AR.
Speaker Bio: Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for more than 30 years holding several senior and executive engineering management positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, Cadence Design Systems.
 Dr. Kao has authored more than 40 technical papers on semiconductor design in IEEE Journals and Conferences, and holds eight US software and IC design patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided IC design.
Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was one of the founding members of IEEE-Circuits and Systems - Silicon Valley Chapter, where he was Chapter Chair in 2005 and 2006.
Dr. Kao currently teaches Renewable Energy, Clean Technology and Business Sustainability courses at the University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension.  He is a consultant for several Clean Tech and VC companies in Silicon Valley, and a Clean Technology consultant for the Chinese Government, for the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology, and for the Malaysian Government on new Emerging Technologies.
Between  2009-2015 Dr. Kao has authored and presented more than  50 talks, seminars, and short courses on the subjects of Clean Technology, Renewable Energy, Business Sustainability, and other Emerging Technologies such as Big Data, Cloud Computing, Robotics, Internet of Things, Smart Cities  and 3D Printing.

Aside from technology Dr. Kao also frequently lectures on interdisciplinary education, interpersonal skills, financial investments, green MBA, and Chinese philosophy (Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, Sun Tzu).
